Everyday commuters and Southern Downs residents have long been raising concerns about a troubling rise in near-miss and multi-vehicle accidents at the intersection of Wood and Albion Streets in Warwick, as pictured. With numerous incidents, locals blame faded lane markings as a significant contributor to the problem.
Many drivers often blast their horns at vehicles encroaching into adjacent lanes and have attributed this trend to the almost non-existent lane markings, which are becoming increasingly difficult to see. The situation worsens during bad weather or reduced visibility in the evenings, resulting in confusion about the correct positioning within lanes.
"I drive through there daily, and it's nerve-wracking," said local Warwick resident, Veronica Chaning. "The lane markings are so faint that you’re never really sure where you're supposed to be. My heart races every time I am at the intersection, wondering if another driver will veer wide and hit my car".
Residents have been calling for urgent measures, including improved signage, to prevent further accidents at the intersection. However, the Department of Main Roads is yet to respond with a timeline for remarking the area. This lack of action is particularly alarming as traffic volumes are expected to rise significantly during the holiday season.
"Ask almost any local, everyone knows how bad that intersection is," Mrs Chaning said, "I have lived in Warwick for four years now and despite numerous emails to Main Roads, nothing has been done."
With no indication on when road safety measures with be addressed, the intersection of Wood and Albion Streets will continue to remain a safety concern for motorists. Safety experts stress the importance of reducing speed and staying vigilant, particularly during bad weather. Until improvements are made, motorists are advised to stay alert to ensure their safety.
