Assumption College student Harry Hume is ranked 14th in the world in under-17 shot put after winning the Queensland All Schools National Qualifier with a personal best of 17.25 metres on the November 2-3 weekend.

He competed in Brisbane on the weekend at a meeting publicised through Ipswich sprinter Gout Gout who has recorded a time in the 200 metres which is being compared to legendary sprinter Usain Bolt at the same age.

Hume won the shot put by .65m.

He will now compete in the nationals in Brisbane on December 6-8.

Hume is part of the large squad trained by Nathan and Bec Rogers through Rogers Sports Coaching.

In the national qualifier. Jacob Kent (U17) and his brother Ethan Kent (U15) each won bronze medal in javelin.

Texas State School student Brock Dawson won bronze in the 400m.

Two weeks earlier, most of the same athletics and many more from the Southern Downs and Border areas competed in the state school championships.

Hume won silver in shot put, Dawson silver in 400m and bronze in 800m and Ethan Kent silver in javelin.

Jacob Kent was fourth in javelin and third in discus.

One of the biggest improvers in the national qualifier at the weekend was Stanthorpe State High School runner Ewan Keith with two massive personal bests. He was clocked at two minutes flat for the 800m, down five seconds.
