With bridges impassable, a missing Compass dial at Mt Marlay and a stolen tree in Stanthorpe, there was much to talk about on the street.

The Town & Country Journal spoke to locals about what was seen and heard. Of the extra water about, most commented that they had become accustomed to the normal issues with the areas that are unsafe to cross, also in other pockets of the Downs, apart from Stanthorpe. "It's a very healthy Quart Pot Creek at the moment," Jan told us on her daily walk past the Big Thermometer. Of course there was gratitude for the downfalls seen, even though "Cyclone Alfred was a non-event," Bob relayed.

Southern Downs Regional Council had reported a missing shrub via their social media, and in other breaking news, others were dismayed that the dial of the Compass on the top of the popular lookout also had vanished into thin air.

Photographer Sandra McEwan had visited for her normal pursuit of skyward appreciation when she found the "dial missing" on April 1. "I drove up to Mount Marlay ... (and) was shocked to see the dial missing, reporting this to council."

Sandra asked, "What is wrong with people?" and those at the lookout last weekend told us they were "disappointed". "We can't have anything nice or special anymore," Sandra posed.
